Why You Need Your

Motorcycle (Class M) License

Since 2020, more than half of the motorcycle operators killed on Texas roads were riding without a valid motorcycle license. A Class M license isn’t just a legal requirement. It is a critical step in gaining the skills and knowledge to ride safely.

STEP 1: Choose Your Course

All riders must complete a state-approved motorcycle safety course before applying for a Class M license. See which type of rider you are by reading below.

New to Riding?

  • Take the Basic Course designed for beginners or those returning to riding after time away.

Currently Riding without a License?

  • The Intermediate Course is for riders with recent on-road experience who need to become legal riders on the road.

Prefer Three Wheels?

  • Choose the 3-Wheel Course. This qualifies you for a Class M license with a 3-wheel restriction (P35).

Before You Go, Please Note:

Requirements

Some schools require a short online eCourse before your in-person training. This must be completed within 30 days of your class.

Gear

Gear requirements vary — check with your course provider to confirm what’s provided and what you need to bring.

STEP 2: Apply for Your License

Once you have successfully completed an approved motorcycle safety course, you will need to:

  • Make an appointment at your local Texas Driver License Office.
  • Complete the driver license application before arriving and mark “YES” for Motorcycle (this form is also available at all driver license offices).
  • At your appointment, you’ll need to provide proof of:
  • U.S. citizenship (regardless if you have previously presented this information) or, if you are not a U.S. citizen, evidence of lawful presence.
  • Identity (only one primary, secondary or supporting document is required)
  • Social Security Number (SSN), if not already on file
  • Provide your Motorcycle Safety Course completion certificate (MSB-8).
MSB-8

The Motorcycle Safety Course completion certificate (MSB-8) is valid for licensing purposes for 24 months from the date it was issued.

Lastly, you’ll need to:

Provide your signature

Have your thumbprints taken

Have your photo taken

Pass the vision
exam

To enhance security, reduce the risk of identity theft or fraud, and protect the integrity of the issuance process, you will be required to verify your SSN, identity and citizenship.

Special documentation is required for minors and for those moving to Texas from another state.

STEP 3: Keep Building Your Skills

Once you have your Class M license, you can take additional advanced courses to sharpen your riding skills:

  • Low-speed maneuvering
  • High-speed stopping and swerving
  • High-speed cornering
