Training & Licensing

Why a Class M License?

Since 2020, over half of the motorcycle operators killed on Texas roads did not have a valid motorcycle (Class M) license.

You can’t control what other drivers do on the road, but you can control your riding knowledge and skill. Get trained and get licensed.

Take Training

To obtain a Class M license, individuals must take an approved motorcycle safety course.

  • An entry-level Basic course is for new and returning riders.
  • An entry-level Intermediate course requires recent or current riding experience.
  • An entry-level 3-Wheel course is for those who prefer 3-wheels over 2-wheels (qualifies for a Class M license with a P35, 3-wheel only restriction).
  • Schools have gear requirements. Verify with the school what is provided and what you will need to bring.
  • Part of the course is an online e-course that must be completed before the in-person training but not more than 30-days prior.
  • The Motorcycle Safety Course completion certificate (MSB-8) is only valid for licensing purposes for 24 months from issuance.

Apply for a License

Once you have successfully completed an approved motorcycle safety course, you will need to do the following at your local Texas Driver License Office:

  • Complete the application before arriving (this form is also available at all driver license offices).
  • Make an appointment.
  • Provide the following documentation to the license and permit specialist:
  • Application for a driver license or identification card (mark YES for Motorcycle).
  • U.S. citizenship (regardless if you have previously presented this information) or, if you are not a U.S. citizen, evidence of lawful presence.
  • Identity (only one primary, secondary or supporting document is required), and Social Security Number (SSN).*
  • Motorcycle Safety Course completion certificate (MSB-8).

To enhance security, reduce the risk of identity theft or fraud, and protect the integrity of the issuance process, you will be required to verify your SSN, identity and citizenship.

* If the SSN is not already part of the driver record, you must provide documents to verify your SSN.
