All types of vehicles are impacted by temporary changes to the roadway in work zones. However, temporary roadway conditions that affect tire traction, balance, stability, or steering patterns may be more problematic for motorcycle riders because they travel on just two wheels.
In 2017-2019, TxDOT sponsored a Traffic Safety Grant project to develop training for TxDOT engineers on ways to identify and reduce risks to motorcycles in work zones. The project has produced an online awareness training course for TxDOT engineers and work zone project managers, a summary leaflet of recommendations, and a brochure for motorcycle riders.
