Safe riders require the help of safe drivers

look01There are many parts to a safe riding equation—one of them being other cars and trucks on the road. Motorcyclists have a responsibility to ride safely, but drivers also have a responsibility to drive safely.

According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, “Over half of all fatal motorcycle crashes involve another vehicle. Most of the time, the car or truck driver, not the motorcyclist, is at fault.”

The MSF published 10 tips on how drivers can help keep motorcyclists safe. These tips included:

  • A motorcycle can be hidden in a car’s blind spot, so take an extra moment to look for motorcycles.
  •  Slippery pavement can make stopping difficult for motorcyclists, so allow plenty of following distance.
  • Remember that the motorcyclist under the helmet is an actual person who could be your neighbor or relative.
