Drive and Ride Safe this Fourth of July

PrintWhile you’re out celebrating our country’s freedom, you could lose your own if you choose to drink and ride. Not only would you be risking your life and the lives of others—you could face a DUI arrest. The average DUI costs $10,000, making it difficult to recover financially.

And the cost doesn’t end there. Arrested drunk drivers face jail time, the loss of their driver licenses, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other hefty expenses, from car towing and repairs to attorney fees, fines, court costs, lost time at work, and more.

Avoid Drunk Driving and Riding Altogether—Use Safe Alternatives to Get Home

  • Plan a safe way home before the fun begins.
  • Designate a sober driver or use public transportation to get home safely.
  • Download NHTSA’s SaferRide mobile app at nhtsa.gov/link/saferride/.
  • Use your community’s sober ride program.
  • If you see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to contact your local law enforcement agencies.

This Fourth of July, remember to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. If you know someone who is about to drive or ride after drinking, be strong—take the keys and make arrangements to help them get safely to their destination.

Remember, with all of today’s alternatives to getting home safely, there’s no excuse for getting behind the wheel or on your bike after drinking alcohol. Driving or riding impaired is never worth the risk, not to yourself or anyone else. If law enforcement pulls you over for drunk driving this Fourth of July, you can count on being arrested.
